Five Advertisements that prove Nepalese Ads are getting better!

Five Advertisements that prove Nepalese Ads are getting better!

You are not the only one if you skipped every Nepali Advertisement aired on TV a few years ago.  The reason being, those ads were mostly dubbed from Indian ads and demanded us to blatantly use their product.  Bluntly put, most of the ads back then were boring, and not worth our time.

Fast forward a few years and Nepali ads seem to have changed their direction. Nepalese ads seem to be getting not just original but more creative as well. Ad watching experience, if the industry continues in the same direction will no more be a drab affair as it used to be.

While there are numerous ads that are catching attention of people left, right and center, I have tried listing a few recent Nepali ads that I really loved for their entertaining content, engaging stories, and creatively inspiring output. I admit, I might have missed a few great ones but the ads enlisted here definitely made a lot of people pause, think and reflect.

Pathao – Respect Everyone

Pathao – Respect Everyone

The latest video titled "Respect Everyone" by Pathao - a ride sharing startup created a buzz in social media and gained more than 3K shares in Facebook within a few days. I found the ad really emotional.

In a so-called fast paced world with a lesser attention span, this 5:20 second ad by Pathao defies digital marketing logic and builds a story that connects with people. On top of it, the ad doesn’t attempt to sell the services of Pathao either. Unlike most ads that feature top end celebrities with large fan following, this ad simply builds a story acknowledging the efforts made by Pathao riders and delivery people.

All in all the ad tells an eloquent story, connects with people, and does its job really well.

fonepay- कछुवा र खरायो

fonepay- कछुवा र खरायो

We are all familiar with the childhood story "कछुवा र खरायो". In this animated ad, fonepay picks up that very classic story and builds it up to state using fonepay as a faster and more efficient medium to transfer funds.

While this ad, unlike Pathao’s explained above, has a clear purpose of selling the company’s service, an interesting concept, engaging animation, and the lion, rabbit and tortoise tick all the landmarks of an interesting ad.

Yes, it could probably have been better with better technology and a more grasping story but it surely shows a way for brands to think differently about their ads. The ad shows a way for companies struggling to create content during uncertain times like now when realistic shoots are virtually impossible due to restrictions.

eSewa – Mr. Damodar

eSewa – Mr. Damodar

Nepal's First Online Payment gateway- eSewa has been making interesting ads for a long time. The first one I noticed was the “Tai Mori” ad which looked more like a song than an ad. And now, eSewa has followed up with “Mr. Damodar"- a unique character that is smart enough to understand the need to go digital in modern days.

Mr. Damodar, played by actor Bipin Karki, takes on a common man, and plays with funny, quirky lyrics to tell the product benefits. It’s blatant product selling yet with its own interesting twists and turns that engages audiences as much as it sells products. After watching this video, I literally started humming the song. Just check the link above to see if you react the same way.

Ncell - #FastForwardLife

Ncell - #FastForwardLife

The message is pretty simple – Let's move forward through the power of digital. And the ad featuring celebrities like Swapnil Sharma, Alisha Rai, Shikshya Sangroula with a motivational anthem song helps people look at positives amidst difficulties. The ad released right after the first lockdown touched on the need to unpause and fast forward life to catch up with progress again.

Ncell launched this musical video in Jan, 2021 in YouTube, and it already has more than 800,000 views on YouTube. Again, unlike most other ads from the same company, the ad shows a complete departure in terms of product placement. The ad starts with a picturesque sunrise in the Himalayas, and fittingly moves along the day capturing Nepalese from all walks of life.

NABIL BANK – Dashain Video

NABIL BANK – Dashain Video

Call me emotional. But there’s nothing like an emotional story told well right. This three and half minute long ad by Nabil launched during Dashain, 2077 while Nepal was experiencing the first wave of COVID-19 shares a relatable story of a family affected by COVID 19.

Again, this is more than just selling a product. It tells a story first, and then places the product within the scope of the story itself. It feels like Mobile banking, the product that the ad is trying to sell, is a necessity as opposed to forced placement. And this is what makes the message clear, powerful and elegant.  By the time I finished watching this ad for the first time, I was almost sobbing. Catch a glimpse of the ad in the link about and see if you feel the same way.

Nepalese audiences are witnessing these meaningful ads recently. In an interview published by New Business Age the president of AAN (Advertising Association of Nepal), Santosh Shrestha shared that, “...despite various limitations, ad agencies in Nepal are producing quality advertisements with worthy results.” And given the ads that we just witnessed, maybe no one can deny that.
